Denver, CO (ContentDesk) July 5, 2006 As early as 1985 E.P.A. scientists have known that many of the drugs we consume and then excrete in urine and feces are showing up in sewage treatment plants across America. Herman Bouwer of the U.S. Agricultural Research Service in Phoenix recalls noting that the cholesterol-lowering drug, clofibric acid, turned up in treated sewer water that was replenishing a reservoir supplying water to Phoenix residents. If clofibric acid can pass through our modern sewage treatment plants, what is to stop the more than 2000 other drugs on the market from entering our drinking water? The dumping of treated sewage into our lakes, streams and oceans is not new. Most modern cities in the world put their treated effluent back into the natural water system. All new sewage plants employ the most modern technological systems available but they are not designed to remove any of the over 2000 drugs and chemicals that enter the treatment plant. It is estimated that over 1 million boats, motor homes, backwoods cabins, trailers and homes built without proper sewage disposal systems, dump their untreated sewage into our U.S. environment. Canadian cities discharge over a trillion liters per year of untreated sewage into surface waters and oceans, almost all of which contain drug residues said Dr Warren Bell in his presentation at Ecosummit 2000. Some of the more common drugs and chemicals found in our water are non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen, analgesics, antiseptics, beta-blockers, heart medications, drugs for epilepsy, chemotherapy drugs, hormones and personal care products. A documented study by the U.S. Government showed that 80% of streams tested in 30 states contained pharmaceuticals and hormones. The E.P.A. is in charge of protecting us from pesticides and other toxic industrial chemicals. Drugs however, are regulated by Health Departments, which possess little expertise in protection of our fragile natural ecosystems and water supplies. Evidently pharmaceuticals are not necessarily considered potential pollutants, even though up to 90% of these drugs could leave the body in feces and urine. Pharmaceutical companies are creating new drugs faster than the E.P.A. can study and classify them. The E.P.A. has stated that the consumer is ultimately responsible for the quality of the water they consume. It has been noted through laboratory testing that activated carbon filters, ozone filters and reverse osmosis water filters remove most traces of these drugs and chemicals.
Who ever said you couldn't get something for nothing sure was wrong. My husband likes to call me the "Freebie Queen" because one of my all time favorite hobbies is searching for things that I can receive for free. Well you can begin to fill your mailbox with free goodies too all that is required of you is a little bit of time and research. I have received loads of free goodies over the past few years including product samples, full sized bottles of shampoo, diapers, baby formula, cosmetics, oral hygiene products, magazine subscriptions, coupons for free products... the list is almost endless. If you have spent any amount of time on the internet I am sure you have seen all of the freebie sites that are out there these days. There are literally thousands of them. But really the only real great places to get legitimate freebies are message boards that pertain to bargains, coupons, or sales. Just do a search for "coupon message boards" or "freebie forums" Most boards like those will have a very up to date freebie section where members post what they have found. Most members of a very active board have verified that they have gotten whatever freebie it is that they are posting so in a sense they have already done most of the work for you. All you have to do if you find a freebie that catches your eye is go sign up for it, then wait for your freebie to arrive. After a while you will start to notice that your mailbox is filling up more and more. One word of caution before you go searching for your freebies. If you find something that is offered for free but you must sign up for a certain offer like a credit card application or a trial membership somewhere, or even a newsletter subscription DO NOT DO IT! Those are scams and you will never see any type of reward. Also you should never have to pay any type of fee like a shipping charge for something advertised as free. Another great way to possibly get full sized products or coupons for full sized products is go to a company's website and give some feedback about the products they offer. For instance I once purchased one of those plug in air fresheners and when I got it home to install it, I had found the fragrance oil had leaked all over everything else that I had purchased that day. It was a big mess so I got online and wrote the company a polite letter explaining to them what had happened. 2 weeks later I received an envelope with coupons for 4 free air fresheners. If you spend money on a product and are not satisfied with it do not be afraid to speak up, you will be heard and probably compensated quite well too. Give companies compliments as well they love to hear from consumers. If you really like a product let them know about it, you never know what you might get in return for your kind words. One thing I have found to be amazing during my years of freebie hunting is that people are not taking advantage of rebates and refunds that companies will offer when they introduce a new product. This is your chance to get something for nothing folks take advantage of it!! All it usually takes is a few minutes to fill out a form and an envelope and your on your way to getting a freebie. Look for forms in your weekly coupon insert for "Try me free" offers or when you are out shopping look around for products with a sticker attached that also says "try me free." Make sure you read the form thoroughly so you don't miss something important. It really is rather simple and not that time consuming. You will be amazed at what companies will give you. A lot of stores such as Walgreen's & Rite-Aid also offer customers free products. You have to purchase the product first but when you send in the form along with your receipt you get your money back. It usually only takes a few weeks to receive a check.Doing surveys is another way to get great free items. Go do a search for survey companies and sign up for every one you can find! There are a lot of companies out there that need people like you to test their products and sometimes not only will you get free products you could possibly get paid too!! Now be aware that no survey company will EVER ask you for money to join. And whatever you do, DO NOT pay for a list of survey companies. Those lists are a rip off!! You can find every company that is out there just by doing a simple search on Yahoo. Now not all survey companies will give you free products to test for doing surveys. Sometimes all you will get for your time is an entry into a drawing but do those surveys too. I have won cash prizes from drawings several times. It really is possible to win. This brings me to entering sweepstake to get freebies. Believe it or not there a lot of people winning sweepstakes everyday including me!! The trick is to find sweepstakes that are giving away a lot of prizes, your chances of winning are so much better if say for instance it is a one time entry and they are giving away 1000 tubes of lipstick. I like to enter the ones that give away beauty products and kids stuff since I have children. I have won a lot of free stuff over the past year including lotions, nail polish, cosmetics, perfumes etc.. The prizes are usually small but it definitely is a surprise when you open your mailbox! And of course it's free! Free! Free! You have a ton of resources available to you especially in the online world. Go out and do some searching and get your free stuff. It's so simple. Here is a great place for you to start. http://www.yes-its-free.com/ I am in no way affiliated with this site it just happens to be one of my favorite places to get free goodies!.

A Brief History of HandbagsHave you ever wondered about the origin of handbags and purses? Handbags have been essential to daily life ever since people have had something precious to carry around with them and only the items have changed over time. The very first mention in written literature comes from the 14th century, even though Egyptian hieroglyphs show pouches carried around the waist. Bags were attached to what were called "girdles" which were fastened to the waist. Embroidery and jewels adorned these articles and were used to show status - the richer the person, the more elaborate the bag. More information on medieval clothing In the 16th century, handbags took on more of an air of practicality with the use of everyday materials such as leather with a drawstring fastener on top. During this period, cloth bags were used that were made larger and used by travelers and carried diagonally across the body. The 17th century saw more variety and both fasionable men and women carried small purses with more complex shapes. Young girls were taught embroidery as a very necessary skill to make them marriagable and we see the rise of beautiful and unique stitched artwork in handbags. Neo-classical clothing became popular in the 18th century with a reduction in the amount of underclothing worn by women. Wearing a purse would ruin the look of this clothing so fasionable ladies started carrying their handbags which were called reticules. Women had a different bag for every occasion and every fashion magazine had arguments on the proper carrying of these purses. In the reticules one would find rouge, face powder, a fan, a scent bottle, visiting cards a card case, and smelling salts. The term "handbag" first came into use in the early 1900's and generally referred to hand-held luggage bags usually carried by men. These were an inspiration for new bags that became popularized for women, including complicated fasteners, internal compartments, and locks. With this new fashion, jewelers got into the act with special compartments for opera glasses, cosmetics, and fans. The 1920's saw a revolution in fashion with varying hemlines and lighter clothing. Bags no longer needed to match the outfit perfectly and the rage was for the stylish lady to carry a doll dressed exactly like herself, complete with matching bag for her minature companion! The discovery of King Tutankhamun's tomb inspired Egyptian art on purses. The 1940's saw new austerity in clothing, including handbags with the war effort in mind. Metal frames, zips, leather, and mirrors were in short supply so manufacters used plastic and wood. The 50's saw the rise of important designer houses including Chanel, Louis Vuitton, and Hermes and the 60's saw the breakdown of old notions of the classical and the rise of youth culture. Copy is the most sincere form of flattery and, if so, Kate Spade, Gucci, Coach and Dior must be very flattered! There are many replica handbags flooding the market (just visit Canal Street in New York City!). Some of these "designer fakes" even carry the label of the Company they are imitating while others just have the signature "C" or "G" without the label. What's in the future of handbags? My personal prediction is more individualized bags and interesting fabrics. What do you think? Send me an e-mail with your own personal prediction for the future..

Cam*ou*flage (kam e-flaj) n. -- Camouflage is defined in the dictionary as a means of disguising things completely, so they appear a natural part of the surroundings. This holds true for the advanced camouflage make-up available today that conceals major to minor skin imperfections, with precision, yet with a perfectly natural look. This new technology, offers the convenience of a cover-up formula that works for both face and body without setting powder.

Application techniques have also become more patient friendly to accommodate the women and men who may not wear ordinary make-up, but need to cover unsightly skin flaws. According to the most recent criteria requested by Dermatologists, Plastic Surgeons and other skin care professionals, camouflage cosmetics should have these inherent qualities:

* Clinically Tested

* Allergy Tested

* Fragrance Free

* Non-Comedogenic

* Opaque Coverage

* Long Lasting

* Waterproof

* Non-Greasy

* Smudge-Resistant

* Appropriate For All Skin Types

* Natural Shade Selection

* Ease of Application

* Blendability

Serving as an adjunctive service to physician care, Camouflage Therapy helps people help themselves. Skin problems can range from pigmentation disturbances to post operative trauma to diseases of the skin. The camouflage material must be versatile enough to mask most skin imperfections including: Birthmarks, Post Laser Redness, Surgical Discolorations, Chemical Peels, Bruising, Hypo and Hyper Pigmentation, Vitiligo, Rosacea, Lupus, Melasma, Dark Eye Circles, Broken Capillaries, Cleft and Craniofacial Conditions, Acne Blemishes, Psoriasis, Sun Spots, Age Spots, Brown Spots, Varicose Veins and Spider Veins, Surface Scars, Uneven Skin Tone, Fine Lines, Furrows, Freckles, and Tattoos.

Detailed instructions should accompany Corrective Cosmetics so that patients can master the cover-p applications that best suits their needs. They want instructions to be short, simple and easy to follow at home. Support services should ideally be provided at a toll-free number or on a dedicated website.

In today's society, where outward image and appearance are increasingly important, camouflaging is gaining speed s the practical solution. "Cosmetic cover-ups are desirable options for eliminating some of the emotional barriers caused by skin disfigurations, says Steven D. Shapiro, Board Certified Dermatologist, Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. He commends the fact that the new age concealers have become uncomplicated and satisfy his multigenerational patient base.

With the increased use of camouflaging to hide skin flaws, new application techniques have been developed by Aestheticians and Corrective Make-Up Artists, to provide gratifying results for their clients. Consider these case studies:

* Case #1. Linda K, was born with a large port-wine stain running from her neck down to her shoulder. As a twin, having this noticeable mark was very disturbing during her formative years. Until she discovered a concealer that would really last, she tried to live with it. However, she now applies a one-step formula that goes on creamy and dries to a matte finish and she wore a low cut dress to her daughter's wedding (see photo below)

* Case #2. Angela E, was born with a hemangioma on her face that grew to huge proportions and seriously disfigured her physically and mentally. With the support of her grandmother and caring physicians, she underwent over 30 surgeries and grafts to give her a more normal appearance. Now that she is in her late teens, camouflage make-up has been a welcome solution to some of the scarring and uneven skin-tone that resulted from the reconstructive surgery.

Proven Application Techniques:

According to Christina Smith, Hollywood Make-Up Artist and Academy Award nominee, "I couldn't do my job without Camouflage Cosmetics. Most of the beautiful stars I work with have something to hide and I must give coverage that lasts under studio lights. Very often, I need to mix 2 or more shades to obtain the perfect match for my client's skin tone (there's no retouching in film photography). Although the shade mixing can be done on the hand, I prefer to use a Q-tip and blend the shades on a piece of wax paper? less mess and easier blending.

* Camouflage make-up is very opaque and should be applied gradually until complete coverage is achieved. Allow time for make-up to dry completely.

* Corrective Cosmetics should be formulated to be worn under make-up, over make-up or alone.

* For best results choose a camouflage make-up shade that closely matches your skin tone. Match the area that is being covered since the skin on your hand may be a different shade than your face.

* Use a light, non-greasy primer before applying camouflage products. This primer will help prepare the skin for a smoother application.

* Blending is the KEY to successful camouflaging on large areas. For a nice smooth finish, apply cover material and use a dry, wedge-shaped sponge to evenly blend make-up on face and neck. For targeted areas such as scars and blemishes use fingertips to blend edges.

* Try using camouflage products for contouring: use a slightly darker shade than your natural skin tone to minimize areas. For example, to minimize a broad nose, draw contour line down both sides of the nose and blend with a sponge. Contouring and highlighting can help minimize the look of swelling.

* Camouflage products are much more than ordinary foundations and concealers. They can be used daily as a foundation for uneven skin tones and to soften the redness associated with rosacea.

* For scarred areas use a camouflage cr?me slightly darker than skin tone since scarred tissue usually has a loss of pigment.

* For post surgery, use a concealing make-up that is creamy in texture so it won't pull on the skin during the application process.

* It is recommended that cosmetic surgery patients purchase their camouflage makeup before surgery in the correct shade since it is difficult to "shop post op."

* After procedures around the eyes, it may be simpler for the patient to use a highly pigmented cover-stick with a creamy consistency to get into corners and avoid tugging on the delicate eye area.

* A word of caution -- all cosmetic cover-ups should never be applied to open skin lesions or raw irritated skin. Seek the advice of a physician if you are in doubt about when it is appropriate to apply a concealer..

1. Make your own deodorant.

You can make your own deodorant by adding together equal parts of baking soda and cornstarch. This is a wonderful recipe for deodorant, and it works. The baking soda absorbs the odor. The cornstarch absorbs the wetness.

2. Perfumes are not necessarily your friend.

Perfumes can be costly and may contain toxins. Pure essential oils can keep you smelling heavenly. Essential oils have also been proven to have many healing benefits.

3. Read the label.

Sometimes it is as simple as reading the label. Though many labels are purposely misleading, reading the label will help us know whether a product is one that we want to put in or on our bodies. If you see a long list of ingredients, and you don't know what most of them are or what they do, you probably want to avoid that product.

4. Check your kitchen.

The best products for our beauty and health are often in our kitchens. Nature provides wonderful fruits, vegetable, seeds and berries, any of which make the best cosmetics and body-care products. Somehow or other, we have learned to doubt Nature. We feel that we know best. We have gone against the laws of Nature in favor of commercialism.

5. Wash new clothes before you wear them.

The clothes you buy go through many processes and many hands before you buy them yourself. If the garment is washable, please be sure to wash it before you wear it for the first time. This will ensure that excess chemicals, pesticides, dyes and bleaches are removed before it meets your body.

6. Our body is one unit.

We often forget that our body is one unit. Many of us have the idea that it is all right to use toxic products on our hair, for instance. We believe that a product used outside our body will not affect the inside of our body. This is not true. Therefore, if you would not put a product in your body (eat it), please do not put it on your body. The reverse holds true.

7. Less is more.

Many of us have cabinets full of cosmetics and so-called health products. We are bombarded constantly with products that promise to make us healthy, youthful and beautiful. However, the truth is, less is more. Find products with the least amount of ingredients. Single-ingredient products, such as coconut oil, Shea butter or various clays, are superb products. Likewise, an occasional meal that consists only of one nutritious food will give your digestive system a rest.

8. Research.

We spend a great deal of time in researching vacation spots we want to travel to. We will ask in-depth questions about whether the car we're thinking of buying gets good mileage and drives well. However, we spend little time researching the products that we put in and on our bodies. Our bodies are our temples. Learn about your body and the food and products you consume.

9. Talk to your elders.

Many of our ancestors knew the health and beauty secrets of the plants and the earth. Over the years, however, we have been taught to discount their knowledge of health and beauty as old-fashioned. The beauty and health industry would love you to believe this. Do not let our elders take these secrets with them to the grave.

Healthy, beautiful skin is possible to achieve, but elusive to many. Despite the myriad of advertisements claiming that one cream or one product can give you the smooth, clear, wrinkle-free complexion that most people hope for, skin care is in fact a complex process grounded in real science and human physiology. Many factors contribute to our need for skin care products, so abstaining altogether from them is not healthy for our skin either. Healthy skin begins with a basic knowledge of your skin type, and how to keep it clean, nourished and protected throughout the year. It also requires a consideration of our overall diet and nutritional status.There are four basic steps to successful skin care: cleansing, toning, moisturizing and special needs such as make-up. Our skin types are genetically determined, but can vary depending on the following factors:dietenvironment, such as climate change or pollutionstress or anxietycosmetics and skin care productsillness or traumahormone levels, such as during puberty, pregnancy or menopauseexercise levelsagedegree and length of sun exposureTo determine your overall skin type, use this simple blot test. Press one ply of a dry tissue onto your face for ten seconds, then remove and examine the results. Balanced skin is damp with no traces of oil. Dry skin has no oil or moisture residue on the tissue. Oily skin has left oily and possibly dirt traces on the tissue. Combination skin has oily and dry marks on the tissue.Dry SkinThis skin type is characterized by:dry, flaky patches and is easily chappedfeels tight across the forehead, cheeks and chinitchy and easily irritatedsensitivebruises easilycan appear powdery or scalyprone to fine lines and wrinklesDry skin is a result of decreased sebum production, the skin's indigenous oil, which is important in keeping the skin moist and lubricated. Consequently, this skin type has less of an oily barrier, allowing water to evaporate easily through the skin. This process can be worsened by detergents, heating or air conditioning, pollution, inadequate skin care, certain chemical ingredients in cosmetic products, overexposure to sun and wind and overuse of soaps and alcohol-based products.Helping to 'restore' dry skin involves protecting the skin with creamy, oil-based products and avoiding harsh soaps, scrubs or products which contain alcohol. The Organic Make-up Company recommends its line of gentle, all natural products, specifically: oatmeal soap, floral toner once or twice per week, rich formulation moisturizer in avocado, calendula or jojoba and facial oil in geranium or avocado at night.Oily SkinThis skin type is characterized by:overall shineenlarged porescoarse textureacne spots and comedones (blackheads)sallow complexiontendency to repel and run make-upresistance to fine lines and wrinklesOily skin is the result of excessive secretions of sebum. It can be exacerbated by poor health, or a diet high in saturated fats and sugar. Emotional upset or stress can also trigger more sebum deposits on the skin. Oily skin is worsened by hormone level fluctuations, alcohol-based products and harsh soaps, both of which dry out the skin, thereby activating the oil glands to produce more sebum. Comedogenic ingredients, such as mineral oil and other ingredients which are derivatives of petroleum block pores and can lead to acne spots.Regular cleansing aids in the removal of bacteria and waxy oils from the pores. Oily skin responds well to alcohol-free toner and a lightweight, natural moisturizer. Try the following products from The Organic Make-up Co. to help 'normalize' oily skin and reduce significantly the frequency of acne break-outs and blackheads: Wild Oregano or Chamomile & Calendula soap, acne-prone toner once or twice per day, regular moisturizer in calendula, jojoba or grapeseed for daytime and acne-prone facial oil at night. A gentle exfoliant once per week, such the dual action exfoliant system offered by The Organic Make-up Co. will help loosen and remove blackheads.Balanced SkinThis skin type is rare, and is characterized by:a creamy colourthicknesssmoothnessfirmnessfew irregularities or blemishesan even distribution of the skin's natural oildryness with ageBalanced skin is worsened by many of the same factors which can afflict other skin types. Any skin care product offered by The Organic Make-up Co. will benefit this type of skin.Combination SkinMost people have combination skin, with oily areas focused around the forehead, nose, cheeks and chin. Other areas of the face can at the same time be very dry. All of the products offered by The Organic Make-up Co. are gentle and effective enough to treat combination skin, but if you have problems with acne, follow the recommendations for oily skin.Sensitive SkinSensitive skin is not a skin type, but rather a skin condition which has developed from a skin type. Anyone can develop sensitive skin, often due to hormonal changes caused by menopause or pregnancy. This condition can also develop from allergies to cosmetic ingredients, foods or environmental factors. Many ingredients made from animal products, petroleum or synthetics are known allergens for the skin.The characteristics of this skin condition are:blotchy, reddened skinbroken capillarieshigh cheek colouritchy, easily irritated skinchaps and burns easilyprone to break-outs and rashesThis condition is worsened by ordinary soap, synthetic, animal or petroleum-derived ingredients, astringents, harsh exfoliants or drying masks, extreme temperatures and climate changes. Use only mild, soothing formulations on sensitive skin. If an adverse reaction occurs to any product, such as a burning feeling, discontinue its use immediately. The Organic Make-up Co. has found that the following products have given those with sensitive skin relief and effective skin care: oatmeal soap, calendula or jojoba moisturizer, hand lotion in calendula and balanced facial oils for night-time.Climate Change and Skin CareHealthy skin is slightly acidic, due to the acid mantle which covers it. The acid mantle is a combination of sebum and perspiration designed to protect the skin from the environment. Each day we lose 850 ml of water through perspiration, so drinking water is helpful to replace this lost fluid. During the summer, water loss is more rapid, and humid conditions accelerate water loss through the skin as the body attempts to cool itself. As a result, sebum production increases, collecting on the skin and clogging pores. For many, this process results in breakouts, so regular cleansing with a mild soap is recommended.A good skin care regimen during the summer months is the following:Cleansing with a natural, vegetable soap such as chamomile & calendula or lavender.Exfoliate with the dual action gentle exfoliant system.Hydrate your skin with acne-prone toner or floral toner, depending on skin type.Moisturize with sweet almond or grapeseed moisturizer, regular formulation.Massage any face oil offered by The Organic Make-up Co. at night.Keep lips protected and moisturized with sunblocker lip balm, lip gloss in natural crimson or lip colour palette in strawberry jam or brick red.Cover up to reduce the amount of exposure to the sun with a wide brimmed hat, long and loose fitting clothing. Ninety percent of skin cancers are due to sun damage.Skin is exposed to very dry environments during the winter months. Heated homes and offices, wind and extreme temperatures increase the amount of moisture lost through the skin. Dry, chapped and flaky skin and lips are not uncommon during this season and are symptoms of unprotected skin. During the winter months skin needs more protection and lubrication to inhibit moisture loss. In addition to regular cleansing and toning, moisturize the hands, face and neck during the day with a richer cream, such as The Organic Make-up Co.'s avocado or carrot tissue in rich formulation face cream. At night, gently massage geranium or avocado face oil. Keep lips protected with any lip product from The Organic Make-up Company.Any skin care discourse which does not include a discussion of nutrition is lacking a fundamental principle of healthy skin care. Good health and beauty are synonymous. For instance, a clogged and spotty complexion can be linked to a diet high in saturated fats and sugar. Sensitive skin may become worsened by poor digestion or inadequate absorption of nutrients. Dry flaky skin may reflect a diet low in fatty acids or vitamin E. Skin that does not heal quickly may be low in vitamins A, B6, C or zinc.A healthy, varied diet helps the skin defend itself against infection, cell damage and premature aging. Increasing your daily intake of fresh, raw vegetables and fruit adds vitamins, antioxidants and water to your diet, all essential elements for healthy, glowing skin.Beautiful, radiant skin is within everyone's reach.
